How to introduce Your new Puppy to your Small Pet

We have very good experience personally with this topic here at Buttercup Pet Product. Our company was started because of our two rabbits, Button and Teacup. Button and Teacup were around 5 years old when we got our Puppy Obi (yes, he is named after Obi-Wan Kenobi) and our first priority was to introduce him to the two girls. As soon as we got home with Obi, we got Button and Teacup on the garden with him to begin the introduction. Initially, we thought Obi would say ‘Hello there’ but he was more bothered about licking his paws! Button really wasn’t fussed but Teacup was all for it, coming up to say hello by giving him a nudge. Obi was great with them both and since then they have been the best of friends!

The reason for this success was down to a few things, the main thing being discipline. We showed an awful lot of discipline towards Obi when he was around the two bunnies by creating firm boundaries on how he should treat them. He is such a good boy and after a few sessions in the garden, he began to learn the do’s and don’ts of being around his new sisters.

The hardest part was teaching him that when the two girls did binky’s and sprinted around the garden, this was not an indication for Obi to go and run after them!

It takes a lot of time and dedication to get to the point where you can feel comfortable with your Pup being around your Buns, but the time and dedication is worth it. The reason we say this is because we lost Teacup shortly after we got Obi and we were very worried about Button's wellbeing after losing her sister. Because we had put in the time with Obi to make sure he respected his sisters, Obi became Button's new companion and she is now obsessed with him! They spend endless hours together in the garden and he pops in to her safe place under the stairs every morning. In the evening when we go to bed, he will then sleep in his bed on the other side of the divider into Button’s area.

All in all, it may seem like hard work in the beginning and we were lucky to have such an obedient puppy to start with, but knowing that button now has a friend for life made all those hours worth it!
