Spring Has Sprung! Keeping Your Small Pets Safe Outdoors This Season

🌼 Spring Has Sprung! Keeping Your Small Pets Safe Outdoors This Season 🌞

Spring is finally here and after a long, chilly winter, it’s not just us humans enjoying the warmer days and longer evenings. Our small furry friends are itching to get outside too! Whether you're the proud parent of a guinea pig, rabbit, or both, now is the perfect time to let them enjoy some fresh air, sunshine, and a bit of hopping or zooming around the garden. 🐹🐰

But before you set up their outdoor play space, it’s essential to make sure they’re safe, comfortable, and happy in the great outdoors. Here’s how you can prepare your pet for springtime adventures without the risks of overheating, dehydration or unsafe enclosures.

☀️ Beat the Heat: Keep Hydration Front and Centre

Even in early spring, direct sun and warm temps can be tough on small animals. Guinea pigs and rabbits can't regulate their body temperature like we can, and they can quickly become overheated.

💧 Hydration is key! Make sure your pets have constant access to clean, cool water when outside. Our Water Bottle Holder is a perfect solution – it keeps bottles upright, secure, and off the ground (no more bottles rolling around in the run!). Designed for easy access and made from durable, weather-resistant PLA, it’s ideal for garden playpens and hutches alike.

🌿 Nibbling in Nature: Provide Safe, Clean Hay

Outdoor time means more exploring and munching, which is great for mental stimulation and dental health. But remember not all grass or garden plants are safe. Always supervise grazing, and provide a steady supply of high-quality hay.

Our Hay Rack makes this simple and sanitary. Mounted off the ground, it keeps hay clean, dry and easily accessible, reducing waste and discouraging unwanted snacking on garden plants.

🛖 Shelter & Shade: Essential for Outdoor Time

It’s important that your pet always has access to shade and shelter. Even in mild spring sun, small animals can suffer from heatstroke in a matter of minutes. Whether you’re using a run or a free-standing enclosure, make sure there are shaded spots throughout the day.

Tip: Drape a light towel or sheet over part of the run, and consider investing in a weather-proof shelter or hideaway they can dart into if they feel nervous or warm.

🐾 Supervise & Secure Their Space

The outdoors can be a magical place for guinea pigs and rabbits – but it can also be full of surprises. Keep a close eye on them while they’re outside and make sure their space is fully secure from predators (including cats, dogs and birds of prey), as well as escape-proof.

Check that enclosures are:

  • Fully enclosed with no gaps

  • Free of sharp edges or wire flooring

  • Positioned on flat, shaded ground
