3D printing is central to how Buttercup develops many of its small-pet accessories. It lets us move from an idea to a physical prototype quickly, test changes and manufacture products in-house without investing in a new mould every time a design evolves.
Why 3D printing suits Buttercup
1. We can improve designs quickly
With a 3D-printed product, a design change starts in the CAD file. That makes it possible to prototype and test improvements without waiting for new tooling to be manufactured.
Our 2026 Guinea Pig & Rabbit Hay Rack is a good example: the current design moved to a one-piece printed construction, simplifying the product substantially compared with the older version.
2. Small batches make sense
Buttercup sells specialist accessories in multiple colours and configurations. 3D printing suits that kind of range because we can produce smaller quantities of each design rather than committing to a very large production run for every colour.
3. It gives us more colour flexibility
Changing filament is far simpler than commissioning a new manufacturing run, which is one reason we can offer coordinated colours across products such as Water Bottle Holders and Hay Racks.
4. We manufacture close to the design process
Our 3D-printed Buttercup accessories are designed and manufactured in Sheffield. Keeping design and production close together makes it easier to spot issues, test improvements and keep the product range evolving.
Does 3D printing always beat injection moulding?
No manufacturing method is best for every product.
Injection moulding can be extremely efficient for very high production volumes once the tooling exists. 3D printing is particularly useful to Buttercup because our range benefits from frequent design iteration, multiple colours and comparatively small production batches.
So the advantage is not that 3D printing is universally “better”. It is that it fits the way we design, improve and manufacture specialist small-pet accessories.
What do we currently 3D print?
Our 3D-printed range includes products across our Guinea Pig Accessories, Rabbit Accessories and C&C Cage Accessories collections.
Not every item sold by Buttercup is necessarily a 3D-printed product, so we describe the manufacturing method on the relevant product rather than making a blanket claim about the entire catalogue.
