Many Buttercup accessories start as a roll of PLA filament before being 3D printed into the finished product. But what actually is PLA, and why do we use it?
What is PLA?
PLA (polylactic acid) is a thermoplastic commonly made using feedstocks derived from renewable plant sources. It is widely used in FDM 3D printing because it can produce accurate, consistent parts in a huge range of colours.
That combination makes it well suited to the way we design and manufacture many Buttercup products in Sheffield.
Why we use PLA
For our 3D-printed accessories, PLA gives us several practical advantages:
- Consistent printing — useful for parts that need to fit together or hold a compatible product securely.
- Design flexibility — we can prototype, test and improve designs without commissioning a new mould.
- Colour choice — it lets us offer the pastel, bright and neutral colours Buttercup is known for.
- Small-batch production — products can be made in-house as they are needed.
Is PLA biodegradable or compostable?
This needs a little more nuance than the word “eco-plastic” sometimes suggests.
PLA is bio-based, but that does not mean every finished PLA product will simply break down in a home compost bin or in the natural environment. Compostability depends on the specific material, finished product and disposal conditions. Products advertised as industrially compostable should meet the relevant certification requirements.

How should 3D-printed pet accessories be used?
Buttercup’s 3D-printed products are designed as practical enclosure accessories, not as chew toys. Like any item used around pets, they should be checked regularly and removed or replaced if they become significantly damaged.
Different PLA formulations can contain different additives and pigments, so we avoid treating “PLA” as a blanket guarantee about every product made from the material.
From filament to finished accessory
